Flag Football Wristband Plays: A Printable 5v5 Card
A wristband isn't your whole playbook. It's the live game-day menu: the handful of plays you'll actually call when the clock is moving. This page gives you a six-play 5v5 card with a short route call for each play. Copy it onto any wristband insert or blank template. Then tap a play name to see it animated.
What a six-play card covers
The six plays are chosen so the card answers the situations you'll face most:
| # | Play | Use it vs. | Situation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Curl-Flat R | Zone | Easy completion, any down |
| 2 | Mesh | Man, pressure | 3rd and medium |
| 3 | Smash R | Cover 2 / soft corners | Shot to the sideline |
| 4 | Trips R Flood | Zone | Overload one side |
| 5 | Jet L Toss | Man, fast defenses | Outside run (not in no-run zone) |
| 6 | PA Boot R | Goal line / no-run zone | Pass off a run fake |
Formation and routes (the card lines)
Every line uses the same letters: X, Y and Z are the receivers, C is the center, QB is the quarterback.
How to set it up
- Pick 6 plays for younger teams, and up to 8–12 for older teams. Template makers like flagcoachplays.com suggest six or fewer big diagrams for 6U–8U.
- Number them and keep the numbers the same all season. Call "Four!" instead of a long name.
- Mirror the plays you need on both sides (for example, 1 = Curl-Flat R, 11 = Curl-Flat L).
- Measure the window of your wristbands. Insert sizes vary, and there's no single standard.
- Print a card for every player who needs one. QB-only cards are common at younger ages.
- Keep a master list on your clipboard that matches the numbers.
Coaching points
- One line per play. If it doesn't fit on one line, it's too complicated for a wristband.
- Put the read on the card. "QB: X > Z > C" saves a timeout.
- Use the same words in practice and on the card. If you call it "flat" in practice, don't print "swing."
- Flag the situation plays. Mark no-run-zone-legal plays (NRZ OK) so nobody calls a run there.
Common mistakes
- Cramming in 20 plays the team has never repped.
- Changing the numbering mid-season.
- Printing at the wrong size so the card won't fit the window.
- Leaving off the QB read.
Variation: Two-window card
Use window 1 for your main six plays and window 2 for situation calls: no-run zone, 4th down, last play. This layout is a common recommendation on wristband template pages.
Rules check
The card includes a run (Jet Left Toss) and a pass off a fake (PA Boot). In NFL FLAG a run is not legal when the ball is spotted in a no-run zone, 5 yards before midfield and before the end zone, and the player who takes the snap cannot carry the ball across the line. Younger divisions and rec leagues often waive or move those zones. Check your league before you print a run on the card.

FAQ
- What plays should go on a flag football wristband?
- Put the 6–12 plays your team runs best, covering a few situations: an easy completion, a man-beater, a zone-beater, a run, and a no-run-zone or goal-line pass. Number them and keep the numbers the same all season.
- How many plays fit on a flag football wristband?
- It depends on the insert size and the age group. Many free templates offer 6-, 8- and 12-box layouts. Younger teams usually do better with six or fewer large plays, and older teams can handle more.
- What's the difference between a wristband play card and a playbook?
- A playbook holds every play with full diagrams. A wristband card is the short game-day menu, with one line or small diagram per play, so players can confirm their route between snaps.
