Jet Left Toss (5v5 Flag Football)

The jet sweep puts a receiver in motion across the formation. The QB hands off (or tosses) to him at full speed behind the line, and he races to the edge before the defense can flow. In 5v5 NFL FLAG the QB can't run the ball, so a jet sweep is one of the cleanest ways to get your fastest player the ball on the move.

What it beats

  • Man coverage. The defender chasing the motion man has to run across traffic from a standing start.
  • Defenses that drop everyone deep. Soft coverage gives up the edge.
  • An aggressive rusher. The ball goes sideways fast, away from the rush lane.

Formation and routes

Doubles: Z wide right, Y in the right slot, X wide left, C at center, QB in shotgun.

  • Z (ball carrier): jet motion right to left, timed to pass behind the QB at the snap.
  • QB: snap, hand off or short toss to Z moving left, then carry out a fake to the right.
  • X: run a vertical to take the left-side defender deep. No blocking.
  • Y: run a quick out right to pull defenders the other way.
  • C: snap and run a short route to the right flat (decoy).

Solid line is the route. Dashed line is motion. The mark is where the ball arrives. Q is the quarterback.

How to run it

  1. Z starts motion on the QB's signal (a foot tap or a "go" call), moving left behind the line.
  2. The center snaps when Z is about one step outside the slot, so Z hits the QB at full speed.
  3. The QB hands the ball to Z behind the line (or uses a short toss, if your league counts it as a legal backward pass).
  4. The QB keeps the fake going to the right with the ball hand hidden.
  5. Z takes the angle to the left sideline, then turns upfield once he's outside the last defender.
  6. X runs off his defender. Y and C pull the other defenders right.

Coaching points

  • Motion timing is everything. Rep snap count plus motion until Z reaches the mesh point at full speed every time.
  • Ball security first. The handoff is the risky part. Teach the "pocket": inside elbow up, outside hand under.
  • Get width before depth. Don't turn upfield until you're outside the defender.
  • Sell the fake. A lazy fake lets the backside defender trail the play.

Common mistakes

  • The snap comes early, Z is still too far away, and the QB hangs there with the ball.
  • Z slows down to take the handoff.
  • X shields his defender with his body. That's screening, and it draws a flag.
  • The play gets called inside the no-run zone. It's illegal there in NFL FLAG and most leagues.

Variation: Jet Fake Pass

Same motion, but the QB fakes the jet and throws to X on a 10-yard comeback, or to Y on the out. Once the defense starts flying to the jet, this keeps them honest.

Rules check (NFL FLAG; check your league)

  • Handoffs must happen behind the line of scrimmage. The QB (the player who takes the snap) cannot run the ball across the line.
  • Once a handoff happens, the pass clock ends and all defenders may rush. Official NFL FLAG rulebooks say this.
  • No running plays inside the no-run zones (5 yards before midfield and before the end zone in NFL FLAG). Some younger divisions waive this, so check your league.
  • Motion rules (one player at a time, no forward motion at the snap) differ by league. Check your league.

FAQ

What is a jet sweep in flag football?
A jet sweep is a run play where a receiver runs in motion across the formation and takes a handoff from the QB at full speed behind the line. He then runs to the edge. It gets a fast player moving sideways before the defense can react.
Can the quarterback run in 5v5 NFL FLAG?
Not directly. In NFL FLAG the player who takes the snap can't run the ball across the line of scrimmage. The QB can hand off behind the line, and running plays are not allowed in the no-run zones. Some leagues use different rules, so check yours.
Can defenders rush on a jet sweep?
Under NFL FLAG rules, yes. Once the ball is handed off, the pass clock ends and every defender is allowed to rush. That's why the motion timing has to be fast and clean.
